Just sitting in a classroom and learning from the written word is not enough. It is important to see the real thing. When you go see actually how things are made you get exposed to different materials, industrial processes, machinery and joinery. These indusrial visits enhance and enrich your learning process.

R.A.K

At this factory they specialized in screen printing on ceramic surface. First the artwork is created, the colours are separated on different screens and the positives are made. Once the transfers are ready they are stuck onto the ceramic surface. It was interesting to see how an artwork can be put onto a surface and made into a permanent imprint. Separating the colours and then layering them on each other was complex.

Sansera

Sansera manufactures automobile components such as rocker arm. A complex process of metal cutting, bending and welding makes each component. The interesting part about this manufacturing unit is that they design and assemble their own machines, which can perform multiple processes than the regular machines that are in the market which perform only one function. This way can save on time and cost of production. In the manufacture of automobile components precision and accuracy is of essence.

Reva- The Electric Car

Reva makes battery operated cars. They are promoting the green way of living with their innovative concept and design of a battery-operated car. The manufacturing of components and spare parts of the car is out sourced and then assembled in their factory. The assembly line is manually operated. To spread their message furthur they have a tie up with Chevrolet, wherein they put in their battery operated engines into the cars of Chevrolet. The car is adapted to function under any climatic conditions be it snow or excess heat.

India Wood Exhibition

India wood was a exhibition of wood. On display there were various interesting machines that could perform complex functions in no time with such ease, for example the lathe and raouter. There were various kinds of woods, veneers and laminates from different parts of the world. There were also different types of wood joineries and ready furniture made from wood. This exhibition gave us an exposure to different kinds of wood, innovative joinery used and the various kinds of industrial processes possible for wood.

Stona Exhibition

Stona was a exhibition on granites and stone. There were fascinating machines that carve almost anything on granite or stone. There were different applications for stone, for example flooring, cladding and furniture. We got exposure to different joinery and adhesives available for stone.

Featherlite Furniture

Featherlite is a company that manufactures furniture on a large scale. They have complex machinery that can perform multiple functions in no time. They make highly functional furniture using a good combination of materials. They skeleton is made from metal and then wood and upholstery is clad to it. This way the piece of furniture becomes reasonable and can be mass-produced. They have a efficient process of producing furniture in large quantities. The metal department does punching, shearing, bending, welding and grinding. The wood department does cutting and other carpentry work.

Honeycomb Wood

They follow a innovative way of making light weight furniture. A honeycomb structure of paper is stuck between two pieces of plywood thus giving the impression that the entire plank is wood and it also becomes light weight. This technique is used to make doors, and cabinets. They also make veneer. First the logs of wood are sliced into sheets, then the sheets are placed next to each other and stuck together to for bigger sheets. The moist sheets are dried and pressed together to straighten them out.
